What is AWS Well Architected?

Well-Architected is a framework developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that provides best practices and guidance for designing and operating reliable, secure, efficient, and cost-effective systems in the cloud. The framework is based on six pillars of architecture excellence:

01 Operational Excellence:

This pillar focuses on the ability to run and monitor systems to deliver business value, and to continually improve supporting processes and procedures.

02 Security

This pillar focuses on protecting information and systems. It covers confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and data.

03 Reliability

This pillar focuses on ensuring that a system can recover from failures and continue to function as expected. It also includes strategies for automatically recovering from failure and testing for reliability.

04 Performance Efficiency

This pillar focuses on using computing resources efficiently to meet system requirements and maintain efficiency as demand changes and evolves over time.

05 Cost Optimization Pillar

This pillar focuses on avoiding unnecessary costs, optimizing spending, and maximizing the return on investment.

06 Sustainability Pillar

This pillar focuses on minimizing the environmental impacts of running cloud workloads. Key topics include a shared responsibility model for sustainability, understanding impact, and maximizing utilization to minimize required resources and reduce downstream impacts.

How the WAR works?

Decide on a date and time for the Assessment and priorities your workload:

  • Let’s say 3 hours, depending on the amount of pre-work completed.
  • Begin a free trial of a WAR tool that automates discovery to speed up and improve the review process.

Schedule a meeting with executive sponsers and stakeholders

  • A representative sample of your internal stakeholders. 
  • Operisoft, which includes a solution architect (AWS Approved Well-Architected Partner). 

The Assessment Day

  • The Review can be carried out either on-site or remotely.
  • Based on the rules, conduct a deep dive on a critical workload.
  • Audit operations for compliance with the five Well-Architected pillars.
  • Conduct assessments using Q&A and automation.
  • Identify some immediate cost savings by exposing unused resources.
